South Coast Air Quality Management District Issued Violations Against The Manhattan Beach Unified School District And Several Contractors After Students Were Exposed To Asbestos
MANHATTAN BEACH, CALIFORNIA (November 15, 2018) The violations came after contractors put flooring material believed to contain asbestos inside of the storage facility of the library.
Investigators believe that the contractors used a power grinder on the flooring material containing asbestos. This may have allowed particles of the harmful asbestos to become airborne.
There is an ongoing investigation into exactly what took place. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used as an insulator.
The United States is one of the only developed nations in the world that has not completely banned asbestos.
Liability In Asbestos Exposure Cases
Exposure to asbestos has been linked to a wide range of different illnesses including mesothelioma, lung cancer, brain injuries, ovarian cancer and laryngeal cancer. If a company or school district exposes faculty or students to material containing asbestos they may face civil liability if anyone is injured. This is true even if the exposure is inadvertent. Contractors have a responsibility to conduct every precaution to make sure they are not putting others at risk. Victims that have been exposed to asbestos may be entitled to significant financial compensation.
