According to CBS, a driver was killed in a car accident after his Tesla engulfed in flames on Highway 101 in Mountain View on Friday, March 23, 2018.
The fatal Tesla crash was reported around 9:29 a.m., when the Tesla driver lost control of his vehicle and struck a barrier that split Highway 101 and Highway 85, which caused the vehicle to catch fire.
The initial crash caused a chain-reaction car accident, resulting in a white Mazda and a gray Audi to crash into the Tesla.
The driver of the Tesla, 38-year-old Wei Huang, was rescued from the burning vehicle and transported to Stanford Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
The extent of the damage the Tesla sustained were extremely significant, and now investigators are looking into whether or not the Model X was in autopilot mode at the time of the crash.
In addition, investigators are questioning the extent of the damages done to the Tesla. In Tesla’s blog post, they explained, “We have never seen this level of damage to a Model X in any other crash.”
This fatal Tesla crash also is a reminder about the ongoing investigations whether Tesla’s lithium battery is defectively susceptible to explode causing fire. According to authorities, Tesla dispatched a team of engineers to the scene of the crash to make sure the battery pack was safe to remove from the vehicle for investigation purposes.
As for the other drivers involved in the car accident, their condition remains unknown.
The fatal Tesla crash remains under investigation.
