Gasoline Tanker Explosion In South Los Angeles Injured Two People On West Slauson Avenue
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (March 17, 2019) – Two people were injured when a 9,000 gallon gas tanker truck caught fire and exploded in a residential neighborhood along West Slauson Avenue.
Los Angeles police are saying that the explosion took place in the Vermont-Florence district and sent residents running for cover. Multiple witnesses said that the explosion felt like an earthquake.
The force of the blast was so strong that it tore manholes in half. A house next to the recycling yard where the explosion took place caught fire.
There was a large plume of fire and smoke coming from the tanker until firefighters were able to get it under control. Two people were injured in the explosion and one of them suffered serious burns.
The Red Cross is currently working to help those who have been displaced by the gas tanker explosion.
Liability In Gas Tanker Explosions
Explosions are much more common than most people realize. In the year 2014 alone an estimated 10,000 were seriously injured in fireworks explosions. Many more people were injured by exploding propane tanks, water heaters and other devices. The cause of explosions typically falls under three categories:
- Deliberate/Planned Explosions (i.e., bombs)
- Human error
- Product malfunctions
Companies that transport natural gas, gasoline or otherwise flammable materials have a responsibility to take steps to prevent explosions. Safety checks should be done on the vehicles to makes sure that there are no leaks and that everything is functioning properly. In many circumstances, human error in terms of safety oversights can cause an accident.
Explosions may also occur due to defects with a truck or product. Gasoline trucks have valves that prevent fluid from leaking out, but these valves don’t always function properly. For example, a valve may leak gas and then trigger a larger explosion. The injuries suffered from an explosion can be extremely serious and include:
- Tympanic membrane rupture
- Injury to brain parenchyma
- Spinal Injuries
- Burn Injuries
When companies fail to adhere to safety standards they may face civil liability in the event of an explosion. Victims will be able to recover compensation for their injuries through a bodily injury claim. Most commercial trucks are required to carry between $500,000 – $1,000,000 worth of liability coverage. A burn injury attorney can investigate all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
