Parking Lot Security Measures
Parking lots can certainly be very dangerous places. They are generally fairly secluded especially at fast food restaurants and typically quite dark. Every year thousands of people are the victims of crimes in parking lots ranging from theft to murder. Here are just a few security measures that can be put in place at parking lots in order to help prevent crime:
Fencing: An adequate fence is the first line of defense in making it more difficult for criminals to enter restricted areas.
Lighting: Perpetrators of crimes are less likely to act in a location that is well illuminated.
Security Cameras: When a parking lot is covered with security cameras, this can act as a deterrent for crime. Signs letting people know that they are under surveillance are an important extra measure. Moreover, in the event of a crime, they can help police catch those who are responsible.
Landscaping: Thick bushes can add to the aesthetic of a parking lot, but they can also offer criminals a hiding spot. An open parking lot with minimal landscaping can help minimize crime.
Security Guards: Depending on the location of a parking lot, a security guard that patrols the premises might be needed. Armed guards can significantly reduce the occurrence of crime at a parking lot.
Depending on the facts of the case, a victim of a violent crime may have the ability to file a premises liability claim.
Liability In Parking Lot Shootings and Assaults
Companies like Jack in the Box and other fast food establishments have a responsibility to provide their guests with a reasonably safe environment. This includes taking steps to reduce the likelihood of a violent crime. Depending on the location of a business different levels of security may be needed. For example, a restaurant in a high-crime area will generally need much more security than businesses in safer locations. Moreover, if there is a history of crime at a business this should prompt property owners to take additional security measures. When a business is negligent and fails to implement adequate security to keep guests safe, the may face civil liability for an assault or shooting at a parking lot. Victims of crime on parking lots may have the ability to file a personal injury claim in order to be compensated for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
