Elias Sanchez Long Beach: 70-Year-Old Pedestrian Identified As Elias Sanchez Died In Hit-And-Run Accident After He Was Dragged 900 Feet By White Cargo Van

LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA (January 8, 2018) – A 79-year-old pedestrian identified as Elias Sanchez has tragically died after he was hit and dragged 900 feet by a white cargo van by North Paramount Boulevard.

Long Beach police are saying that the accident took place around 7:50 p.m. Elias Sanchez was crossing South Street by Paramount Boulevard at a crosswalk on a green light. A cargo van that was turning on South Street hit him and dragged him several hundred feet.

The driver of the cargo van made no attempt to stop or call the police following the accident. Shortly after the initial accident a second driver hit Elias Sanchez as he was laying in the roadway.

Long Beach police interviewed that driver who remained at the scene. Police are still searching for the driver of the white Cargo van that left the scene. The van is being described as a 1980’s Chevrolet or Ford cargo van with a ladder and green writing on the back.

If you have information about the driver of the van you can help the investigation by contacting crime stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

Liability In Hit-And-Run Accidents

Drivers are expected to use caution when turning onto a different street. If there is an accident they should remain at the scene and exchange information with the other driver or pedestrian. Leaving the scene of an accident that causes great bodily injury is a felony. A driver that chooses to flee will likely be subject to both criminal and civil liability.  According to the California Vehicle Code 20001, “(a) The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident and shall fulfill the requirements of Sections 20003 and 20004.”

The family of a victim can hold the driver of a hit-and-run accident responsible for the negligence by filing a wrongful death claim. If more than one vehicle is involved in an accident there could be multiple sources of recovery. A wrongful death attorney can evaluate the specific facts of your case and let you know what your rights are. There are statute of limitations associated with being able to file a claim. It is therefore important to act quickly.
