LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA (November 20, 2018) At least five utility workers were injured in an electrical vault explosion accident not far from Golden Shore and West Seaside Way.
Long Beach police are saying that the explosion happened around 4:00 a.m. There is an active investigation into what may have caused the accident to take place.
Southern California Edison is saying that at least 84 people lost power in the area. The condition of the utility workers that were injured remains unknown at this time.
Liability In Electrical Accidents
When a worker is injured in California they will typically be able to file a workers compensation claim for lost wages and medical bills. Workers are barred by statute from suing their employers directly. However, it is possible for a worker to file a third party liability claim if other entities were responsible for the accident. OSHA has cited electrical accidents as the third leading cause of injury or death. Here are a few of the most common reasons why electrical accidents occur.
A number of accidents occur when workers use or come into contact with unsafe equipment. Arc flash devices can malfunction and leave worker seriously injured. Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are supposed to shut off power in an area when conditions are dangerous, but these devices malfunction.
Unsafe worker practices also regularly contribute to accidents. Lockout/tagout procedures can be used to prevent accidental startup of electrical equipment. Failure to use the proper safety procedures can cause workers to be electrocuted.
An unsafe work environment can also contribute to accidents. A number of explosions occur when gases come into contact with electricity. This could be due to a gas line leak or any number of other reasons. Workers can be seriously burned in these explosions and require extensive medical care.
A burn injury attorney can investigate your claim free of charge and let you know what your rights are. Contractors, utility companies and product manufacturers may all potentially face civil liability for an electrical explosion. An attorney can help preserve key pieces of evidence associated with your case and make sure that your rights are being protected.
