Jared Intravia Lancaster: 32-Year-Old Man Identified As Jared Intravia Died In Car Accident After Hitting Bale Of Hay From Big Rig Truck That Overturned On West Avenue E
LANCASTER, CALIFORNIA (January 16, 2018) – A 32-year-old man identified as Jared Intravia tragically died in a freak accident after his Honda Civic hit a bale of hay that fell off a big rig truck’s trailer on Avenue E by 50th Street East.
Lancaster police first heard about the accident around 5:45 a.m. on Tuesday January 15. It all started when a 2016 Kenworth tractor was traveling westbound on Avenue E with two trailers both loaded with hay.
As the driver of that big rig drifted into the right shoulder of the road the second trailer carrying hay overturned. Several large bales of hay were thrown into the roadway.
The car that Jared Intravia was driving hit one of the bales of hay. At least three other vehicles also hit bales of hay that fell off the semi-truck. All four of the victims had to be taken to the Antelope Valley Hospital in order to receive treatment.
Despite life-saving efforts, Jared Intravia later died due to his injuries. An investigation into the fatal truck accident remains ongoing.
Liability In Accidents Involving Poorly Secured Cargo That Falls Into The Road
There are a number of potential sources of liability for any car accident involving someone hitting an object that came off a truck. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), truck drivers are supposed to undergo periodic training and medical exams to make sure that they are fit to drive. Far too often though driver fatigue plays a role in a number of crashes. A truck driver may be sleepy and begin to drift off the road thereby causing a crash. Moreover, a trucking company may face civil liability for the crash if the truck driver was working at the time of the accident.
In addition to driver liability, there may also be liability on the shipper or carrier of goods for failing to properly secure or load their cargo. There are federal regulations regarding how much weight that trucks can carry. The proper packing techniques should also be used to prevent loads from shifting of becoming loose during an accident. Every year thousands of people are injured or killed in accidents involving debris in the roadway. These types of collisions are almost always preventable. But companies rush to get things done and cut corners in the process.
The family of a victim of a truck accident is able to seek justice by filing a claim under California’s Code of Civil Procedure 377.60. A truck accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case in particular and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued.
