Los Angeles firefighters responded to the Park Lane Apartments fire around 7:46 a.m. It took officials around half an hour in order to put the fire out.
One man had to be taken from the apartments in grave condition, but he is expected to survive. An investigation into the source of the fire remains ongoing at this time.
Liability In Apartment Fires
Cooking accidents, arson and smoking remain the leading causes of fires in apartments. It’s important that people never leave the kitchen unattended when they are cooking. A fire can begin in just a few seconds. But there are a number of factors beyond a tenants control that may cause a fire to start. For example, a number of fires start because of electrical problems. Worn electrical cords can short circuit and lead to a fire. Landlords may face civil liability in a apartment fire if someone is injured or killed.
Apartment landlords and building owners have a responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe environment in order to keep guests safe. Beyond taking measures to prevent fires, apartment owners should also take steps to warn guests about fires. According to Article 36. Fire Protection and Prevention, “A fire extinguisher, rated not less than 2A, shall be provided for each 3,000 square feet of the floor area, or fraction thereof.” Smoke detectors should also be installed in order to alert guests of danger. Victims of apartment fires may be able to file a personal injury claim for damages.
