Electrical Vault Explosion Accident In Koreatown Involved Gas Leak According To Los Angeles Fire Department Officials
KOREATOWN, CALIFORNIA (October 12, 2018) Two women were injured in Koreatown when a pair of electrical vaults exploded on Friday morning, according to Los Angeles Fire Department Officials.
Firefighters rushed to the 600 block of South Shatto Place around 8:30 a.m. Witnesses said that they could smell natural gas in the area before the explosion.
Police sectioned off the area in order to ensure the safety of people in the building. A hazmat team was called to the scene in order to deal with the natural gas.
The LAFD and So Cal Gas are, “working together to identify and mitigate any safety hazards.” Investigators are still working to determine what may have caused the explosion.
An investigation into the electrical vault explosion accident remains ongoing at this time.
Common Causes Of Gas Explosions
Natural gas explosions can leave victims with devastating injuries. In order for an explosion to occur there are two crucial elements that must come together. There must be a source for the gas leak and an ignition source. Here are some of the common factors that may lead up to a natural gas explosion:
Gas furnaces may be used improperly and therefore allow a leak to occur.
Gas appliances can be installed incorrectly. This happens a lot more than people think.
Damaged gas lines can allow dangerous levels of gas to build up. Gas lines are susceptible to rust and the elements.
Gas tanks can be poorly designed or manufactured.
If you suspect that there is a gas leak you should extinguish any open flames and head outside. Do not flip on any light switches. Even a small electric spark can act as an ignition source for a gas explosion. Call 911 and have a professional from the gas company assess the situation. If you are injured in a gas accident there are measures you can take to help preserve your rights. A Los Angeles burn injury lawyer can get you compensation for your injuries.
Liability In Gas Explosion Accidents
There are a number of potential sources of liability following a gas explosion. Generally speaking, property owners have a responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe manner. This includes doing maintenance on appliances to make sure they are working properly. Failure to maintain appliances may impose civil liability on a property owner. Likewise, the gas company could be liable if they failed to maintain their lines and this caused injury or death. Another major contributor to gas leaks and explosions are faulty installations. Workers might use the wrong parts and this could cause a leak. Any person that is injured in a gas explosion accident may have the ability to file a claim for damages including lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering.
