Bicyclist Critically Injured After Car Drifted Into Bike Lane By Clairemont Mesa Boulevard In San Diego
KEARNY MESA, CALIFORNIA (December 8, 2018) – A bicyclist was seriously injured when a 33-year-old driver operating a 2007 Toyota Corolla drifted into the bike lane and caused an accident.
San Diego police have not yet released the name of the bicyclist that was injured in the crash. The bicyclist was in a designated bike lane at the time of the accident.
The driver of the Toyota Corolla remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.
Liability In Bicycle Accidents
Drivers have a responsibility to obey the rules of the road and stay in their line in order to prevent accidents. There is simply no reason why a driver should drift into a bicycle lane. If a driver was distracted and hits a bicyclist they could face civil liability. In addition to driver negligence, there could also be civil liability on the part of a city for an accident if it was caused by a defect in the roadway. For example, a number of bicycle accidents occur because bike lanes are poorly designed. They can be inadequately marked or abruptly end and merge riders into traffic.
