Liability In Car Accidents

Drivers in California have a responsibility to keep an eye out for traffic and wait to turn until it is safe. A number of accidents are caused by drivers who make dangerous u-turns or left turns. According to the California Vehicle Code 21801, “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Drivers that make dangerous turns onto the highway and cause an accident will likely face civil liability. Any victim’s can hold the negligent driver accountable through a personal injury claim. Injuries in car accidents can include broken bones, spinal injuries and traumatic brain injuries. A number of the injuries following a car accident are psychological in nature. According to The British Journal of Psychiatry, “Post-traumatic stress disorder was diagnosed in 6% of patients 2 weeks after the accident, in 2% after 1 year and in 4% after 3 years. Robust predictors of later PTSD symptom level were intrusive symptoms shortly after the accident and biographical risk factors.” A car accident attorney can evaluate all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
