HIGHLAND, CALIFORNIA (May 5, 2019) – A 30-year-old homeless man in a wheelchair identified as Mark Allen Kaiser has tragically died in a hit-and-run car accident by the intersection of Baseline Street and Sterling Avenue.
Highland police officials are saying that the accident took place around 2:30 p.m. and involved a car traveling westbound. The driver did not stop and took off after hitting Mark Allen Kaiser.
The victim was transported to the Loma Linda Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead. Authorities are still trying to find the woman that hit the victim.
Liability In Hit-and-Run Accidents
It is a felony to flee the scene of an accident that causes serious injury or death. According to California Vehicle Code 20001, “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident and shall fulfill the requirements of Sections 20003 and 20004.”
Many drivers flee the scene because they are intoxicated or scared of going to jail. But fleeing the scene of an accident only makes things worse. Drivers will likely face criminal as well as civil liability. The victim of a hit and run accident or their family may have legal recourse. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your options are.
