Initial efforts to put out the fire were hampered by leaking natural gas which kept reigniting the initial fire. The exact cause of the explosion remains unknown at this point, but authorities suspect that it may have been a gas leak.
Firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene and transported the Garden Grove man to the hospital with serious injuries.
Liability In Mobile Home Explosions
In the United Sates there are more than 5,500 gas explosion accidents every year. This causes nearly 600 injuries and more than 125 fatalities. According to the NCBI, there are a number of very serious and costly injuries that a person may receive from a gas explosion including:
- Blast ear – tympanic membrane rupture and middle ear damage
- Blast lung – injury to the lung parenchyma, can have delayed symptom presentation
- Blast brain – injury to brain parenchyma, even without direct injury to the head
- Blast eye – rupture of the globe of the eye
- Blast belly – injury causing abdominal hemorrhage and perforation
There are numerous sources of potential liability for a mobile home explosion accident. For example, companies that install gas appliances have a legal obligation to make sure that the installations are done correctly. In many situations mechanics put on a poor fitting valve on an appliance which allows for a gas leak.
Gas companies could also face civil liability for an accident if they were not properly maintaining their gas lines. According to the California Civil Code § 1714 subsection (a), “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.” Failing to fix a leaking gas line could amount to negligence.
Gas explosion victims are often left with serious and expensive medical bills. Severe burn injuries can cost well over $1 million and require numerous painful surgeries. Victims may be able to recover damages through a personal injury claim. A burn injury attorney can work to get you money for lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. It doesn’t cost anything to hire an attorney and they only get paid if they are able to successfully resolve your case.
