Liability In Apartment Fires

According to the Sandy Spring Volunteer Fire Department, “Between 2010-2014, there were 107,800 apartment fires, causing 410 deaths, 4,280 injuries and $1.2 million in property damage.” Victims of apartment fires can be left with a whole host of injuries including:

  • First degree burns
  • Second degree burns
  • Third degree burns
  • Respirators injuries

The vast majority of people who are injured in fires aren’t actually burned. They suffer serious ailments from smoke inhalation. This is also the number one cause of death following a fire. There may be numerous sources of potential liability for an apartment fire including:

  • Landlords: Property owners have a legal obligation to take steps to keep their premises reasonably safe. This includes installing smoke detectors to warn residents of a fire.
  • Appliance manufacturers: Fires can start for a number of different reasons including faulty appliances. Space heaters, in particular, have been known to cause a number of apartment fires.

Victims of apartment fires may have legal recourse through a premises liability claim. Damages can include money for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering. According to the NCBI, the mean cost to treat burn injuries was $32,000. This can be a heavy burden for individuals as well as families. It doesn’t cost anything to hire a premises liability attorney and they only get paid if they successfully resolve your case.
