Rental Truck Accident Left One Person Dead And Several Injured After Truck Ran Stop Sign On Nebraska Avenue and Bethel Avenue

FRESNO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (November 20, 2018) One person has died and three other people suffered moderate injuries when the driver of a diesel truck ran a stop sign by Nebraska Avenue and Bethel Avenue.

Police believe that the truck involved in the accident may have been a rental truck. The truck’s license plate was from out of state and did not match the home state of the driver.

The driver of the diesel truck suffered injuries as well. Neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to have played a role in the accident. Residents of Fresno County took to social media to express their condolences and concerns following the car accident.

Elizabeth Cura said, “R. I. P and prayers for the family. 🙏

Greg Hicks wrote, “Yea I almost was killed when someone ran a stop at the same place and totaled my jeep. The lady and everyone else plus the ambulance thought I was sack of crap cause she had kids They need to make it a 4 way stop on all those back roads.”

Ruthie Pinheiro said, “Its crazy just how many accidents occur on Bethel.”

Liability In Accidents Involving Rental Trucks

Drivers have a responsibility to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner in order to avoid accidents.  When a driver is negligent and causes an accident they will face civil liability for any person that is injured or killed. In years past, rental companies could be held liable for the actions of the drivers that used their trucks. But since the passage of the graves amendment rental truck companies will generally not be held responsible for the negligence of their drivers.  However, there are some exceptions.

There may also be liability on the part of a city if a dangerous condition on public property contributed to an accident. For example, an intersection that lacks stop signs, traffic lights or other basic safety features may pose a hazard for drivers. When there is a history of accidents on a roadway that puts a city on notice that there are potential safety issues that need to be addressed. The statute of limitations for municipal claims is much shorter than other personal injury and wrongful death claims. It is important to act quickly and seek the guidance of a skilled car accident attorney.
