FRESNO, CALIFORNIA (October 3, 2018) Two woman were attacked by pit bulls during a morning walk by Christmas Tree Lane when the dogs broke free from a neighbors yard.

One of the people who was attacked by the pitbulls has been identified as a  70-year-old woman. Neighbors are saying that the dogs were being allowed to roam the neighborhood and they remain terrified of being attacked.

Joy Harvell says that her neighborhood has been on high alert following the attacks. She was a witness to one of the attacks.  The Central California SPCA confiscated both dogs and said that they will be euthanized.

An investigation into the Fresno dog attacks remains ongoing at this time.

How To Protect Yourself From A Dog Attack

Dogs can often behave erratically. But they have emotions in much the same way that people do. Learning how to read a dog’s body language and taking several other factors into account can help keep you safe. Here are just a few things that you should know in order to stay safe around dogs:

  • Avoid panicking: Dogs can pick up on your emotional state and sense if you are afraid.

  • Avoid eye contact: Dogs are territorial and they will treat eye contact as a challenge.

  • Distract the dog: You can try distracting the dog by giving them something to chew on like a backpack. This may help give you enough time to escape.

  • Fight back: As a measure of last resort, fight back against a dog that is trying to attack you. Deliver punches and kicks to the dogs nose in order to try to  stun the dog and get away.

Victims of dog attacks can often be left with serious injuries and high medical bills. A Los Angeles dog bite injury lawyer can take steps to get you compensation for your injuries.

Liability In Dog Attacks

Dog owners in California are responsible at all times for making sure their animal is properly secured and that it doesn’t pose a threat to anyone. Under California law, owners are responsible for any injuries or deaths that their dogs cause no matter the dogs previous record. As long as the victim was lawfully in a public or private space when the attack occurred there is a good chance the owner will be liable. Victims will typically be able to file a claim against the dog owner’s home insurance policy in order to recover money for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
