Jackson Elementary School Stabbing Leaves 13-Year-Old Boy Injured In Fresno

FRESNO, CALIFORNIA (February 11, 2019) – Police are looking for a suspect that stabbed a 13-year-old boy at Jackson Elementary school who was playing basketball with two friends.

A male suspect walked up to the 13-year-old boy as he was playing basketball and stabbed him. The suspect watched the children play before attacking.

The victim was taken to the hospital in order to receive treatment where he was listed in stable condition. There is no description of the suspect, but authorities think that he was a teenager.

Liability In Stabbings On School Grounds

Schools in California have a responsibility to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe manner. This includes taking steps to make sure that a school is safe from crime. According to the California Civil Code § 1714 subsection (a), “Everyone is responsible, not only for the result of his or her willful acts, but also for an injury occasioned to another by his or her want of ordinary care or skill in the management of his or her property or person, except so far as the latter has, willfully or by want of ordinary care, brought the injury upon himself or herself.”

Crime can be deterred on school grounds with security guards, cameras and adequate lights. The level of security necessary at a school will depend on if the school is in a high crime area. A victim of a stabbing on school property or their family may be able to file a claim for damages. A personal injury attorney can investigate all of the unique facts of your case and let you know if you have a claim that can be pursued.
