El Centro School Bus Accident: School Bus Accident Injured Yuma High School Volleyball Players In El Centro Near Imperial Avenue and Hamilton Avenue

EL CENTRO, CALIFORNIA (September 11, 2019) – Numerous members of the women’s volleyball team at Yuma High School were injured in a school bus accident by the intersection of Imperial Avenue and Hamilton Avenue.

El Centro police are saying that the accident took place around 8:40 p.m. on Thursday. Ten members of the Yuma High School girl’s volleyball team were injured in the bus accident.

Paramedics were called to the scene and took all of the victims to the hospital. Police believe that the school bus collided with two other vehicles that were stopped at a red light.

The school bus driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. Neither alcohol nor drugs are believed to have been factors in the bus accident.

Liability In School Bus Accidents

School bus drivers are held to a very high standard in terms of safety. Bus companies are considered “common carriers” under the law. According to the Judicial Council of California Civil Jury Instructions, “Common carriers must carry passengers [or property] safely. Common carriers must use the highest care and the vigilance of a very cautious person. They must do all that human care, vigilance, and foresight reasonably can do under the circumstances to avoid harm to passengers[or property].” Here are just a few of the most common reasons that bus accidents take place:

  • Driver fatigue
  • Speeding
  • Intoxication
  • Prescription drug use
  • Inclement weather
  • Road conditions

Bus accidents like the one that injured the Yuma High School students have become far too common. According to the FMCSA, nearly 5,000 people are killed every year in truck and bus accidents. A fully loaded school bus can weigh as much as 36,000 lbs. Even a low velocity collision can leave victims with serious injuries. School buses that carry 15 or more passengers are required by federal regulations to carry at least $5,000,000 of liability insurance. Victims are often left with serious injuries  including:

  • Broken bones
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Head injuries
  • Soft tissue damage
  • Organ damage

It’s important to seek medical treatment after a bus accident. Failing to seek medical treatment may jeopardize your ability to pursue a civil claim down the road. Victims of bus accidents are able to recover damages through a civil claim. This can cover lost wages, medical bills and pain and suffering. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
