PALO ALTO, CALIFORNIA (October 4, 2018) A mother and her daughter identified as Nancy Dellamaria and Chloe King were injured when a volunteer pilot crashed as he was performing a go-around at the Palo Alto Airport.
Chloe King and Nancy Dellamaria were passengers in a medical airplane when the pilot crashed not far from the Palo Alto Airport. The single engine Mooney M20 was attempting to land when the accident took place.
Chloe King and Nancy Dellamaria were able to survive the plane crash and transported to the hospital in order to receive medical care. The Angel Flight West pilot died from his injuries.
Storm King, the father of Chloe King, said that his daughter suffered a brain injury and had to undergo surgery following the accident.
Angel Flight West is a nonprofit organization that offers free emergency transport to patients that have serious medical conditions. The FAA is continuing their investigation into the fatal plane crash.
Why Planes Crash
The vast majority of plane crashes that take place every year are in private aviation with small aircraft. Commercial air travel is incredibly safe. Most of the accidents that do take place occur during either takeoff or landing. An aviation safety expert has indicated that there are five major reasons why crashes occur:
Pilot error has been estimated to account for 50% of all crashes. Most of the accidents occur when pilots are trying to either land or take off.
Mechanical failure is another leading cause of plane crashes. A lack of thrust with the engines can cause a plane to stall midair.
It has been estimated that bad weather accounts for nearly 10% of crashes. A number of planes have actually been hit by lightning.
Sabotage and acts of terrorism also may contribute to crashes. It’s rare but some pilots have managed to deliberately crash planes.
Pilots aren’t the only ones that make errors while operating planes. Other forms of human error regularly contribute to crashes. For example, the air traffic controller may be negligent in the instructions that they give pilots.
Victims of airplane crashes are often left with severe trauma such as spinal cord injuries and brain injuries. An experienced aviation accident attorney can take steps to help preserve victims rights and get them compensation for their injuries.
Liability In Aviation Accidents
Pilots have a responsibility to train extensively and operate their craft in a safe manner. But accidents still occur every now and them. Most pilots make errors as they are attempting to land a plane. They may overshoot the runway or come in at too sharp an angle. If a pilot is negligent and causes an accident the company or charity that they work for may face vicarious liability for the crash. Aviation accident reports typically take 6 months to 1 year to complete. It’s always a good thing to seek the professional advice of a personal injury attorney after an accident. Among other things they can help victims get compensation for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
