Laura Miller Injured In California Car Accident That Killed Jason Paul After Big Rig Truck Hit Their Disabled Vehicle On Interstate 5 Freeway
LOST HILLS, CALIFORNIA (October 13, 2018) A 27-year-old woman identified as Laura Miller was injured in a truck accident that killed Jason Paul after their vehicle became disabled from a car accident on the I-5 Freeway near Twisselman Road and Lost Hills.
Kern County Authorities are saying that Jason William Paul was attempting to get Laura Miller out of the passenger side of their car. Their vehicle had been pushed in between two lanes of traffic following a previous car accident.
Jason Paul was standing on the passenger side of the vehicle when a semi truck that was traveling southbound on the freeway hit the left side of the car with Laura Miller.
Luis Salgado, Jr. was traveling around 55-miles per hour past Twisselman Road when the truck accident took place. California Highway Patrol are saying that the driver did not see the disabled vehicle in the roadway.
Jason Paul tragically died as a result of his injuries. Laura Miller was taken to the Kern Medical Center with major injuries.
California police do not believe that alcohol was a factor in the collision. There are very few details about the car accident that led up to the fatal crash.
Common Truck Accident Injuries
Nearly 5,000 people are killed every year in truck accidents. Those that survive can often be left with life changing injuries. Here are just a few of the common injuries that can occur following even a low speed collision with a truck:
Traumatic Brain Injuries: Head trauma is a common occurrence in truck accidents. A victim’s head can be thrust forward or to the side and come into contact with the steering wheel, glass or the dashboard. Victims of traumatic brain accidents can have numerous problems including memory loss and changes to personality. Medical doctors use a number of systems to diagnose traumatic brain injuries. But one of the most common is the Glasgow Coma Scale. The Glasgow Coma Scale is a 15 point scale that categorizes the severity of brain injuries based on (A) Motor Response, (B) Verbal Response and (C) Eye Opening.
Neck and Back Injuries: One of the most common injuries that occur in car accidents and truck accidents is whiplash. A person’s head is thrust forward violently even if it doesn’t impact anything. Victims may have localized pain and feel tingling, numbness or paralysis after an injury. Head and neck movement should typically be avoided which can be accomplished by means of a splint.
Spinal Cord Injuries: Depending on the severity of a spinal cord injury paralysis can occur. Injuries which are not permanent can still leave victims in agonizing pain for months and even years. Doctors should conduct an MRI on patients that they believe may have suffered a spinal cord injury.
A victim of a truck accident is filled with adrenaline after the initial impact. Symptoms and long term health issues may take days or even weeks to show up. A truck accident attorney can take steps to help you get the proper medical care you need and make sure that you are taken care of.
Liability In Truck Accidents
Truck drivers are supposed to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner and take steps to avoid collisions. But this is not always the case. The car accident that injured Laura Miller and killed Jason Paul is far from an isolated incident. A number of collisions occur every year with disabled vehicles. It is deeply unfortunate. Even if a vehicle becomes disabled in the middle of the road a truck driver should be going slow enough to be able to avoid it. All drivers are supposed to scan the road ahead of them and take necessary action to avoid rear-end collisions. Indeed, there is a presumption of negligence when a driver hits another vehicle from behind. It demonstrates that the driver was either going too fast or wasn’t paying attention to the road ahead of them. Victims of truck accidents will be able to file a personal injury claim in order to get help with medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering.
