An investigation into the accident at the Irwindale Speedway remains ongoing at this point.
Electric Shock Accident Statistics and Prevention
Depending on how high the voltage is that’s involved in an electric shock, victim’s might feel a slight tingle or sustained injuries. Between 2003 and 2010 1,738 workplace fatalities occurred due to electric shock. Most of the accidents took place in utilities, mining, construction and agriculture. There are a number of reasons why an electrocution accident may take place:
Appliances: Poorly functioning appliances can become unstable and cause electrocutions.
Wiring: When wires are not properly insulated or connected, there is a higher chance for electrocution. Faulty wiring may even cause a fire.
Downed Power Lines: In most circumstances downed power lines will still be active. Avoid them at all cost and avoid touching anything that is in contact with them.
Property owners may face liability if a person is injured or killed in an electrocution accident. Victims may be able to file a premises liability claim in order to recover damages.
Liability In Electric Shock Accidents
When a worker is injured or killed in California they will typically have the ability to file a worker’s compensation claim in order to get help with medical bills. In a number of situations, an injured worker may also have the ability to file a personal injury claim in order to receive additional compensation. Workers are barred by statute from filing a claim directly against their employer. However if a company separate from a workers employer was responsible for the accident that may give rise to a third party claim.
For example, if a business did a poor job installing wiring that could amount to negligence. In many circumstances, electricians will leave live wires exposed. Or the live wire may come in contact with another piece of metal that becomes electrified. Many of the injuries associated with electric shock may not show up right away. Neurological dysfunctions are known to occur down the road. Victims may be able to receive compensation for medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering by hiring a premises liability attorney.
