3 teenage boys died in a car accident on Sunday night. The crash was reported at 8:36 p.m. in Pasadena, and it is unknown whether there were drugs or alcohol involved in the crash. The accident remains under investigation.
While initial reports indicated that the car flew off of the freeway, it was later determined that the vehicle was actually driving on Michillinda Avenue and south of Foothill Boulevard.
All three of the teenagers were from the San Gabriel Valley area. The driver of the 2005 silver Honda, 17-year-old Andyn Bay, would have turned 18 on Monday. He, as well as one of the passengers, were declared dead at the scene. The passenger was identified as 16-year-old Eric Gullekson. Both of these were from Temple City.
The other passenger, identified as Nicholas Torres, was 17 when he died at the Huntington Memorial Hospital, according to FoxLA. Torres was from Monterey Park, and set to graduate from highschool later this month. Family members explain that all three met about a year ago.
According to ABC7 Los Angeles, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a raised concrete curb edge and then hit a chain-link fence. The car then collided with the freeway embankment and rolled over, coming to rest upside-down on a sidewalk under the overpass.
As reported by CBS Local Los Angeles, Betty Maciel, Torres’ grandmother, described her experience. “My son Jacob called me and he told me that my grandson got into a bad accident,” she said, “I called his mother right away and she went right out there to the scene.” She rushed to the hospital after the call, but arrived after Torres had already died.
“My little grandson, he was like a son to me, you know? My baby,” sounding distraught.
Family and friends held a candlelight vigil at the site of the accident on Monday evening. The memorial had flowers, candles, and tributes written onto the overpass walls.
Gullekson’s mother, Leonor Montelongo also responded to the loss of her child. “He was taken too soon from me. I want condolences for all the families of the children that lost their lives here and I just miss him.”
Luke Gullekson, Eric’s brother also described his sibling fondly, “He was a good boy. He picked up skating, he was always with his friends. He was the one that made everyone laugh in the room.”
Torres’ step-dad, Joel de la Torre, says, “He was a really good kid… I just want to be here for my wife and the rest of my kids. That’s all I could do.”
Igy Watkins, one of Bae’s friends, says that, “He was loyal. He was there for me whenever I needed him. Always. He gave the best advice. He was the best at anything he tried to do.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call the California Highway Patrol Altadena Area office at 626-296-8100.
Two of the families also have launched GoFundMe pages to aid in their grieving. Help for the Torres family can be provided here, and help for the Gulleckson family can be provided here.
